Session Outline

This week focuses on developing the fundamentals of the straight drive — a key foundation for balance, alignment, and power through the ball. Players will work through a series of drills designed to build strong setup positions, committed weight transfer, and efficient swing mechanics.

The week begins with underarm feeds to refine body control, timing, and direction, before progressing to sidearm feeds that introduce realistic pace and decision-making. Across each activity, the emphasis is on driving with intent, transferring weight forward aggressively, and maintaining balance through the shot.

By the end of the week, players should feel more stable at contact, more connected through their movements, and more confident driving the ball down the ground with rhythm and purpose.

Activity 1

Activity 1: Underarms Straight Drives

Duration: 10–15 minutes
Repetitions: 30–60 balls

Activity Overview:
This activity focuses on developing a strong, balanced straight drive using underarm feeds from half-pitch distance. The batter works on driving the ball directly back past the feeder with smooth rhythm, clean contact, and controlled body movement. The emphasis is on alignment, staying tall through the shot, and allowing the weight to transfer forward naturally while maintaining balance at the finish.

Activity 2

Activity 2: Underarm Check Swing competition (1 zone)

Repetitions:
30–60 balls (or play first to 15 points)

Activity Overview:
A competitive check swing drill where the batter must hit the ball through a single straight gap down the ground. The coach delivers underarm feeds, and the player’s goal is precision and control rather than power. The first to 15 points wins. The player gets 1 point if they get it through the gap and the coach or feeder gets one point if they miss.

Activity 3

Activity 3: sidearms straight drives

Duration: 10–20 minutes
Repetitions: 30–60 balls

Activity Overview:
This activity develops a powerful and balanced straight drive using sidearm feeds delivered from the full length of the pitch. The batter focuses on maintaining strong alignment down the ground, transferring weight forward with intent, and striking through the line of the ball. The added pace from the sidearm feed challenges timing, rhythm, and balance, helping players learn to stay controlled while generating power through a committed check swing.

Activity 4

Sidearms (10 in 10 challenge)

Repetitions:
10 successful on drives within 10 minutes (or until completion)

Activity Overview:
This timed challenge focuses on quality shot selection and execution under realistic conditions. The batter must hit 10 clean on drives through the mid-on gap within 10 minutes. The emphasis isn’t on forcing shots, but on discipline — waiting for the right delivery and executing decisively when the opportunity presents itself.
